What is Backstage?
Backstage is an open source developer portal framework created at Spotify and donated to the CNCF. It provides a software catalog of every service, its owner and its dependencies, plus software templates for scaffolding new services with organizational standards built in, and TechDocs for docs-as-code alongside the catalog. It is a framework rather than a product: teams build their own portal on it with plugins, which means it fits exactly and requires a team to own it. That maintenance cost is the reason commercial internal developer platforms exist alongside it.
