What Is the Main Difference Between Rippling and ADP?

Rippling is a platform built around one employee record that covers HR, IT and finance; ADP is a payroll and HR company with separate products for different business sizes.

Rippling, founded in 2016, builds every module on the same data, so a change like a new hire or a promotion updates payroll, app access, devices and spend rules together. ADP has been in payroll for over 70 years and segments its products by headcount: RUN for small businesses, Workforce Now for mid-sized companies, and larger suites for enterprises.

In practice, that means Rippling competes on breadth and automation, and ADP competes on payroll depth, tax compliance experience and scale.

How Do Rippling and ADP Pricing Compare?

Neither publishes list prices, so you need a quote from both.

  • Rippling requires the core Rippling Platform, then lets you buy products such as Payroll, Benefits, Time and Attendance or Device Management separately. Most are billed per employee per month; some include a monthly base fee.
  • ADP RUN offers four packages: Essential Payroll, Enhanced Payroll, Complete Payroll and HR+, and HR Pro Payroll and HR. Pricing is via a “Get Pricing” form, and ADP was advertising three months of free payroll for new RUN sign-ups when we checked (terms apply).
  • ADP Workforce Now offers three packages: Select, Plus (adds benefits administration) and Premium (adds time and attendance). Pricing is by quote.

For what buyers report paying, see our ADP pricing guide and the Rippling pricing page on Spotsaas. A fair comparison lists the same modules on both quotes: payroll, benefits administration, time tracking and HR support at minimum.

Is Rippling Good for Payroll Compared With ADP?

Yes; both handle US payroll and tax filing well, so the choice comes down to what surrounds payroll. Rippling says its payroll runs on in-house infrastructure and that customers can run payroll in minutes with built-in approvals. It also imports year-to-date payroll data so you can switch mid-year.

ADP’s strength is experience with complex payroll and tax situations. RUN includes an employee mobile app, flexible pay options such as direct deposit and the Wisely pay card, and access to payroll and HR professionals by phone. Its AI assistant, ADP Assist, is built into the product.

If you run payroll across many states or have complex tax situations, ask both vendors how they handle multi-state registrations, local taxes and amendments. That is where the gap, if any, will show.

Which Is Better for HR, IT and Finance Beyond Payroll?

Rippling covers more ground. Its catalogue includes HRIS, recruiting, performance, learning, scheduling, benefits administration, identity and access management, device management, expenses, corporate cards, bill pay and travel. ADP covers HR, talent, time, benefits and compliance services but does not sell IT or spend management.

Rippling also offers Workflow Studio for building custom automations across modules. If your IT team currently provisions laptops and app accounts by hand for each new hire, this is the most practical difference between the two.

ADP counters with a wide set of compliance services (tax credits, garnishments, unemployment claims, employment verification) and an app marketplace for connecting other tools.

How Do User Ratings Compare?

Rippling rates higher on the review sites both vendors are listed on. Rippling scores 4.8 out of 5 on G2 and 4.9 on Capterra (4,881 reviews), as shown on those sites in September 2026. Rippling’s own comparison page, citing September 2026 scores, lists ADP Workforce Now at 4.2 on G2 and 4.4 on Capterra, and ADP RUN at 4.7 on G2 and 4.6 on Capterra.

Treat vendor-compiled comparisons with care, and read reviews from companies your size. Our Rippling review summarises what users praise and criticise, and the most common Rippling complaint is cost growth as modules are added.

Which Is Better for Global Teams?

Rippling, if you need an employer of record. Rippling offers global payroll, EOR, contractor of record and contractor payments, and says it supports global workforces in 185+ countries. Rippling’s comparison page states that ADP has no native EOR or contractor-of-record product. ADP does sell ADP Global Payroll for companies with their own entities abroad.

Rippling PEO vs ADP TotalSource

ADP TotalSource is an IRS-certified PEO; Rippling PEO is not on the IRS list. Both companies offer a PEO for businesses that want co-employment and pooled benefits. ADP TotalSource entities appear on the IRS active CPEO list with an effective date of January 1, 2017. We found no Rippling entity on the same list (report date August 7, 2026, checked September 28, 2026).

Rippling’s PEO pitch is flexibility: you can leave the PEO and keep the same software. Read the full Rippling PEO guide or compare providers in our best PEO for small business roundup.

Who Should Choose Rippling, and Who Should Choose ADP?

Choose Rippling if:

  • you want one system for HR, payroll, IT and spend;
  • you hire often and want onboarding, app accounts and devices handled automatically;
  • you have or plan to have employees or contractors abroad.

Choose ADP if:

  • payroll and tax compliance are the main job, and you want a long-established provider;
  • you want phone access to payroll specialists;
  • you want a PEO that is IRS-certified (ADP TotalSource);
  • you expect to scale into ADP’s larger suites and prefer to stay with one vendor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Rippling cheaper than ADP?

It depends on the modules. Both vendors quote, so request quotes for the same scope. Rippling can cost more once you add IT and finance products, but those replace separate tools.

Who is ADP’s biggest competitor?

In small-business payroll, Paychex and Gusto are frequent comparisons. In mid-market HR, Paycom, Paylocity, Rippling and UKG are common alternatives.

Can I switch from ADP to Rippling mid-year?

Yes. Rippling says its team imports your year-to-date payroll data so quarterly and annual tax filings continue without interruption.

Does ADP offer IT or device management like Rippling?

No. ADP’s product catalogue covers payroll, HR, time, talent, benefits, compliance and PEO services, not device or identity management.

Which ADP product should I compare with Rippling?

  • Under 50 employees: RUN Powered by ADP.
  • 50 to 999 employees: ADP Workforce Now.
  • Want co-employment: ADP TotalSource against Rippling PEO.

Is ADP the largest payroll company?

ADP is one of the largest and best-known payroll providers, and says it has served businesses for more than 70 years. Size matters less than fit, though: compare the specific ADP product for your headcount.
