Quick answer: GTM engineering is the job of building the automated systems a sales and marketing team runs on: pulling and enriching contact data, scoring accounts, watching for buying signals, and triggering personalised outreach and CRM updates without manual work. Clay, which says it coined the term in 2023, defines it as “the practice of building automated revenue systems using AI, data enrichment, and workflow automation.” A GTM engineer sits between RevOps and sales, uses tools such as Clay, n8n, enrichment APIs, a sequencer and the CRM, and is measured on pipeline outcomes such as meetings booked and hours saved. In the US, Levels.fyi reports a median total compensation of $156,000 (27 submissions, checked September 2026).
“GTM engineer” went from an unfamiliar title to one of the most-discussed roles in B2B sales in about two years. The top search results come from vendors who sell the tools the role uses (Clay, Apollo, ZoomInfo), so this guide pulls their definitions together, marks where they disagree, and keeps salary figures to named sources.
If you are mapping the tools themselves, start with our overview of types of sales tools. If you are looking for go-to-market strategy (positioning, pricing, channels), see how to build a go-to-market strategy.
What is GTM engineering?
GTM (go-to-market) engineering treats revenue work as a systems problem. Instead of hiring more reps to research accounts and write emails by hand, a GTM engineer builds workflows that do the repeatable parts automatically, then hands reps better leads with the context already attached.
The three vendors that rank for the term describe it in similar ways:
| Source | Definition |
|---|---|
| Clay | “The practice of building automated revenue systems using AI, data enrichment, and workflow automation.” |
| Apollo | “A technical expert who bridges the gap between sales, marketing, and technology to build automated, scalable revenue systems.” |
| ZoomInfo | “The discipline of designing and automating the systems that turn buying signals into revenue motion.” |
On the origin, Clay writes that it “coined the term in 2023”. Apollo dates the role to early 2023 but credits the workflow tool Flowla with popularising it, and ZoomInfo refers to “Clay’s 2023 framing”. No independent source settles who used it first; what is clear is that Clay’s customer community made the title common.
What does a GTM engineer do day to day?
Clay’s own description is short: GTM engineers “identify revenue bottlenecks, write specs, ship prototypes, and scale what works.” In practice the work falls into three layers that both Clay and ZoomInfo use:
- Data foundation. Clean, deduplicated CRM data: enrichment jobs, merge-and-purge, ownership rules, schema audits. ZoomInfo calls the enrichment waterfall “the GTM engineer’s first piece of infrastructure.”
- Data modelling. Scoring accounts against the ideal customer profile, adding AI-researched data points (for example, “does this company sell to enterprises?”), and deciding which signals matter.
- Activation. Turning the data into action: routing inbound leads, alerting a rep in Slack when a target account shows intent, drafting personalised outreach, and writing results back to the CRM.
A typical week might include rebuilding a lead-scoring model, adding a job-change trigger for past customers, debugging an API that stopped returning phone numbers, and reviewing which AI-written openers got replies. Clay says the role is judged on “meetings booked, hours saved, trial conversion rates lifted”, not on tickets closed.
GTM engineer vs RevOps vs SDR: what is the difference?
| GTM engineer | RevOps | SDR | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main job | Builds automated revenue systems | Runs and governs the revenue process | Books meetings through outreach |
| Typical output | Enrichment waterfalls, signal triggers, scoring models, AI workflows | CRM configuration, forecasts, reporting, process docs | Calls, emails, LinkedIn touches, meetings |
| Measured on | Meetings booked, hours saved, conversion lift, cost per lead | Forecast accuracy, pipeline health, data quality | Meetings set, pipeline created |
| Code? | Often SQL or Python; not always | Rarely | No |
ZoomInfo puts it in one line: “RevOps improves the output. GTM engineers build the machine.” Apollo describes the roles as complementary: the GTM engineer builds new systems, then RevOps maintains and scales them.
The line is blurry in practice. Bloomberry’s analysis of 1,000 job postings found that 9 of the 10 most common GTM engineer responsibilities also appear in RevOps engineer postings; the difference was emphasis, with GTM roles leaning toward outbound and automation and RevOps roles toward forecast accuracy. Clay notes that most companies start by embedding GTM engineers inside RevOps.
No source compares GTM engineers and SDRs head-on, but the relationship is simple: SDRs run outreach, and GTM engineers build the research, enrichment and triggers that outreach runs on. Bloomberry’s review of 100 GTM engineer LinkedIn profiles found SDR or BDR to be the most common previous role.
What tools do GTM engineers use?
The stack has four layers. Prices are vendor-published, checked September 2026.
| Layer | Common tools | Starting price |
|---|---|---|
| Data orchestration and enrichment | Clay | Free plan (500 actions, 100 data credits a month); Launch $167/month annual or $185 monthly |
| Workflow automation | n8n, Make, Zapier | n8n Starter $20/month annual ($24 monthly), self-hosted Community Edition free; Zapier Professional from $19.99/month; Make has a free plan and credit-based paid tiers |
| Data and enrichment APIs | Apollo, Prospeo, FullEnrich, Hunter, ZoomInfo | Apollo Basic $49/seat/month annual; Prospeo Starter $37/month annual; FullEnrich about $55 for 1,000 credits a month |
| Sequencing | Instantly, Smartlead, lemlist, Outreach, Salesloft | Instantly Growth $47/month ($37.60 annual); Smartlead Base $39/month; Outreach and Salesloft quote-only |
| System of record | Salesforce, HubSpot | HubSpot Sales Hub Starter $7/seat/month annual ($20 monthly); Salesforce Starter Suite $25/user/month |
| Signals | Website visitor identification, intent data, job-change tracking | Varies; Leadfeeder has a free Lite plan, intent platforms are mostly quote-only |
Bloomberry’s posting analysis gives a sense of what employers ask for: Clay was the most-mentioned tool, followed by HubSpot (52% of postings), Outreach (49%), Salesforce (45%), Zapier (39%), Apollo (29%) and n8n (28%). Two small licensing notes: n8n’s free self-hosted edition is under a “Sustainable Use License” limited to internal business or personal use, and Clay charges both actions and data credits, so a workflow’s cost depends on how many providers it calls.

Example GTM engineering workflows
1. Waterfall enrichment
No single data provider finds every email or phone number. A waterfall sends each record to a first provider, and if it returns nothing confident, passes it to the next. Clay describes it as “a fallback chain, not a single lookup”, where “a record stops at the first confident result, and you are billed only for the lookup that returns it.” A basic build:
- Import target accounts from the CRM or a list.
- Find decision-makers by title.
- Run a work-email waterfall (cheapest confident provider first), then verify.
- Only for high-fit accounts, run a phone waterfall, which costs more per record.
- Write results back to Salesforce or HubSpot and dedupe.
Clay advises piloting on 500 to 1,000 records and keeping a strict confidence threshold for cold outreach, because “a wrong email is worse than a missing one.” Apollo, FullEnrich and others now sell waterfalls too; our Clay review explains how credits add up.
2. Signal-based outbound
Instead of emailing a static list, the system waits for a reason to reach out. Common signals include:
- a champion changing jobs;
- a funding round or a hiring spike for a relevant role;
- a target account visiting your pricing page;
- a surge in third-party intent on your category.
ZoomInfo’s worked example is a typical play: an intent spike triggers a pull of the buying committee, enrichment against the CRM, a Slack alert to the owner, and a logged trigger in Salesforce. Clay’s signals page lists customer examples such as Vanta monitoring SOC 2 announcements and CISO job postings.
Website and intent signals come from separate tools; see how to identify website visitors and best intent data providers. Spotsaas also publishes first-party category intent from software buyers researching on its site; here is how Spotsaas buyer intel works.
3. Inbound routing and AI research
When someone signs up or books a demo, a workflow enriches the company, scores it, and routes high-fit leads to an account executive within minutes, while low-fit sign-ups go to a nurture sequence. Clay describes an internal build that scores sign-ups for “$25k-plus potential”. An AI research step (Clay’s Claygent, or a model called from n8n) can add a one-line account summary so the rep does not start cold.
How much are GTM engineers paid?
Salary data for a two-year-old title is thin. Two named sources were verifiable in September 2026:
| Source | Figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Levels.fyi | $156,000 median; 25th percentile $110K, 75th percentile $295K | US total compensation (base, stock and bonus), 27 self-reported submissions |
| Bloomberry | $127,500 median | Salary ranges printed in GTM engineering job postings (2025) |
The gap is expected: Levels.fyi includes equity and bonus and skews toward well-funded tech companies, while posted ranges show base pay. Both samples are small, so treat them as a range, not a benchmark.
Is GTM engineering a good career?
Demand signals are strong but young. Clay says about 100 GTM engineering job listings go live every month (its own count). Bloomberry found GTM engineering and RevOps postings combined grew 205% year over year (January to September 2025 versus 2024); that figure is often quoted as GTM engineering alone, which it is not. Bloomberry also found the average posting asks for 4.11 years of experience.
The upside is that the skills (data, automation, AI workflows, commercial judgement) transfer to RevOps, growth and sales leadership roles if the title itself fades. The risk is that some companies use “GTM engineer” for what is really an SDR role with a Clay login, so read the responsibilities, not the title.
How to become a GTM engineer
- Master one CRM. Apollo’s advice is to learn Salesforce or HubSpot deeply first: custom fields, routing, scoring and data hygiene.
- Learn enrichment and orchestration. Clay is the most-requested tool. Clay University offers free courses and one-week instructor-led cohorts; Clay’s certification program was paused for new submissions when checked in September 2026.
- Add basic SQL and APIs. Bloomberry found SQL and Python each in 38% of postings. Clay’s own FAQ says coding is “not necessarily” required, but reading an API response and writing a webhook is.
- Learn prompt design for data. Structured AI outputs (yes/no, categories, short summaries) are what make AI research usable at scale.
- Build a portfolio. Apollo notes that “proof-of-work portfolios now matter more than credentials.” Rebuild a scoring model or a signal-based campaign for a real or sample company and document results.
The most common entry paths, per ZoomInfo and Bloomberry: SDRs or AEs who automated their own work, RevOps analysts who learned SQL, and marketing-ops managers.
When should a company hire a GTM engineer?
- Reps spend more time on research and data entry than on selling.
- You already pay for three or more data or engagement tools that do not talk to each other.
- Outbound volume is capped by headcount, not by the size of your market.
- Your CRM data is too unreliable to score or route leads.
If you have fewer than three sellers, a well-configured CRM plus one all-in-one tool (see best sales software) is usually enough; a part-time or agency GTM engineer can cover the rest.

Frequently asked questions
What is a GTM engineer?
A GTM engineer builds the automated systems behind sales and marketing: data enrichment, account scoring, buying-signal triggers, AI research and CRM updates. The role sits between RevOps and the sales team.
Do GTM engineers need to code?
Not always. Many work mostly in no-code tools such as Clay, n8n and Zapier. SQL and Python show up in about 38% of postings each, according to Bloomberry, and API literacy matters in almost every role.
What is a typical GTM engineer salary?
Levels.fyi reports a US median total compensation of $156,000 from 27 submissions. Bloomberry’s median of posted salary ranges is $127,500. Both samples are small.
What is the best GTM engineering course?
Clay University is the most direct starting point: free courses on outbound, signals, CRM enrichment and prompt engineering, plus one-week instructor-led cohorts. Apollo runs its own GTME program. Neither is a formal credential, so pair any course with a portfolio project.
What jobs fall under GTM?
- Sales: SDR, account executive, sales engineer
- Marketing: demand gen, product marketing, marketing ops
- Operations: RevOps, sales ops, GTM engineering
- Post-sale: customer success and account management
Is GTM engineering the same as growth engineering?
They overlap. Growth engineering usually works inside the product (sign-up flows, activation, experiments), while GTM engineering works on the sales and marketing systems around it. Clay’s examples include Verkada, where GTM engineers sit in the growth team under the CMO.
Can a small startup use GTM engineering without hiring one?
Yes. Founders often build a first version themselves with Clay’s free plan, a sequencer and a CRM, or hire from Clay’s partner directory of agencies and freelancers for a fixed project.
