Sitting between raw databases and the people who query them, a semantic layer defines business terms such as revenue, active customer, or churn once, in a central place, so every report uses the same logic. Analysts and business users then work with these named metrics and dimensions instead of writing joins against raw tables. The main purpose is consistency: two dashboards asking the same question return the same number.
