If you script against Instantly’s API directly instead of using their dashboard, one thing trips people up fast: a plain request without a User-Agent header gets a 403. curl works fine by default; some HTTP libraries need the header added by hand before Instantly will talk to them. It’s a small thing, but it’s the kind of detail you only find by actually integrating with the tool, not by reading the marketing page.
TL;DR
Instantly.ai is a cold-email sending and sequencing platform built around unlimited email accounts and warmup on its outreach-only plans, a large B2B contact database, and a unified inbox (Unibox) for managing replies. We run live outbound sequences through it. The core sending and sequencing mechanics work as advertised; where it gets rough is around API completeness (some settings aren’t exposed through the standard update endpoints) and sequence-timing semantics that are easy to misread when building a multi-step campaign. Pricing starts at $47/month for outreach-only plans and scales to bundle plans with lead-database access from $94/month.
Instantly.ai at a glance
| What it is | Cold email sending, sequencing, and warmup platform |
| Starting price | $47/month (Growth, outreach-only, unlimited accounts/warmup) |
| Entry bundle with lead database | $94/month (Starter, 450M+ B2B leads database) |
| Free tier | No — paid plans only, as of this writing |
| Our usage | Live, ongoing outbound sequences via dashboard and direct API integration |
What Instantly.ai claims to do
The pitch, per Instantly’s own marketing: unlimited email sending and account warmup so cold outreach lands in inboxes instead of spam, an AI-assisted lead-finding layer against a 450M+ contact database, a unified inbox (Unibox) for managing replies across accounts, and campaign analytics for tracking performance. Bundle plans add an “AI Sales Agent” and “AI Reply Agent” on top of the base sending infrastructure.
What we actually found using it
1. API integration and campaign management
What we did: Built and maintained live outbound campaigns, integrating directly with Instantly’s API rather than only using the dashboard.
What happened: The standard campaign-update endpoint doesn’t expose every setting — some fields (the unsubscribe-header toggle, in our case) require minting a scoped API key and hitting a more specific REST endpoint directly, rather than going through the general update call. That’s a real gap between what the dashboard can do and what the documented API surface covers.
Verdict: Works, but budget time to work around API gaps if you’re integrating rather than clicking through the UI.
2. Sequence timing semantics
What we did: Built a multi-step sequence with different delays between steps.
What happened: Instantly’s step “delay” field means the number of days before that step sends, not days after the previous step sent. It’s a subtle distinction that’s easy to get backwards when you’re first building a sequence — the timing comes out wrong if you assume the more common “wait X days after the last touch” convention.
Verdict: Read the field definition carefully before trusting your first draft of a sequence’s timing.
3. Editing a live campaign
What we did: Updated an already-active sequence with leads at various stages already in it.
What happened: Editing didn’t reset progress for leads partway through — they picked up on the new schedule from wherever they already were, rather than restarting from step one. That’s the behavior you want, but it’s worth confirming rather than assuming, since a sequence tool that silently restarts everyone would quietly re-send steps people already got.
Verdict: Behaved correctly in our case; still worth testing before trusting it blind on a live list.
Pros
Sending infrastructure is genuinely built for scale. Unlimited accounts and warmup on the outreach-only plans is a real structural difference from tools that meter per-inbox.
API access exists and mostly works. You can integrate rather than being locked into the dashboard — with the caveat above about gaps in what the standard endpoints expose.
Sequence editing on live campaigns behaves sensibly — it doesn’t blow up in-progress leads’ timelines when you make a change.
Cons
API completeness has gaps. Not every setting available in the dashboard is available through the standard update endpoints — some require a more roundabout REST path.
Sequence-timing semantics aren’t intuitive. The delay field’s meaning (before, not after) is a real source of first-time-setup errors.
No free tier to test the platform before committing to a paid plan, as of this writing.
Pricing
Instantly runs three separate pricing tracks rather than one ladder — worth knowing before you pick a plan, since “outreach-only” and “bundle” plans solve different problems.
| Plan | Price/mo | What’s included |
|---|---|---|
| Growth (outreach-only) | $47 | Unlimited email accounts + warmup, 1,000 uploaded contacts, 5,000 emails/mo |
| Hypergrowth (outreach-only) | $97 | 25,000 contacts, 125,000 emails/mo, premium support |
| Starter (bundle) | $94 ($85 annual) | 5,000 emails/mo, 1,000 contacts, 450M+ lead database, AI Sales Agent |
| Scale (bundle) | $194 ($175 annual) | 100,000 emails/mo, 25,000 contacts, AI Reply Agent, advanced deliverability |
| Agency (bundle) | $555 ($500 annual) | 500,000 emails/mo, 100,000 contacts, dedicated infrastructure |
| Enterprise | Custom | 500,000+ emails/mo, private deliverability network |
Pick outreach-only if you already have a lead source and just need sending/warmup infrastructure. Pick a bundle plan if you also need the lead database.
Who it’s for
Teams running outbound at volume who want infrastructure, not just a sender. Unlimited accounts and warmup matter once you’re past a handful of inboxes.
Teams comfortable integrating via API get the most value — the dashboard alone doesn’t expose everything, but the API (with its gaps) does more.
Frequently asked questions
Does Instantly.ai have a free plan?
No, as of this writing there’s no free tier — plans start at $47/month for outreach-only or $94/month for the entry bundle with lead-database access.
Can you integrate with Instantly’s API directly instead of using the dashboard?
Yes, but budget time for gaps — not every dashboard setting is exposed through the standard update endpoints, and some configuration requires a more specific REST call.
How does sequence step timing work?
Each step’s delay value is the number of days before that step sends, not days after the prior step — a distinction worth confirming before trusting your first sequence draft.
