MRP vs Manufacturing ERP vs MES: What Do You Actually Need?

• Per user subscription plus modules (Business Central, Epicor Kinetic, NetSuite): you pay for named users by role, then for manufacturing, planning or quality modules.

1. Name your production mode and your worst bottleneck. Stockouts of raw materials, late orders, unknown job costs and traceability gaps each point to different strengths.
2. Demand a demo on your own BOM. Give vendors a real multi-level bill of materials, a real routing and a real sales order, and watch them plan it end to end.
3. Test costing. Ask how labour, machine time and overhead are applied, and how variances post to the ledger.
4. Check traceability. Run a mock recall: from one lot of raw material, find every finished good and customer.
5. Judge the partner as hard as the product. For mid-market ERP the implementation partner decides the outcome; ask for references in your industry.
6. Plan data and people. Clean item masters, BOMs and routings before migration, and make a production lead the project owner.
