Best Free MDM Software in 2026: 7 Genuinely Free Options and Their Limits

The short answer: the best genuinely free MDM depends on your devices. For Apple-only fleets, Apple Business is now free with built-in device management, and Mosyle Business is free for up to 30 Apple devices. For mixed fleets, Miradore’s Free plan covers up to 50 devices and ManageEngine Mobile Device Manager Plus has a fully featured free edition for up to 25. If you already pay for Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, you also have basic mobile management included.

Is there a free MDM tool available?

Yes, several. Five vendors offer permanent free plans (Apple Business, Miradore, Mosyle, ManageEngine and Jamf Now), and Microsoft and Google include basic mobile management with their productivity suites. The catch is always a device cap, a platform limit or a missing feature set. Free plans suit small offices and pilots; most companies upgrade once they pass 25 to 50 devices or need app deployment, patching and automation.

1. Apple Business: best free MDM for Apple devices

Apple launched Apple Business on April 14, 2026 as a free service in more than 200 countries and regions. It replaces Apple Business Manager, Apple Business Essentials and Apple Business Connect, and it includes built-in mobile device management. Apple says the MDM was “previously available as a subscription within Apple Business Essentials in the U.S.”, and Business Essentials customers stopped paying their monthly device management fee after April 14.

• What you get: Blueprints to set up devices with preconfigured settings and apps, zero-touch deployment, Managed Apple Accounts created automatically from Google Workspace or Microsoft Entra ID, employee groups and custom roles, App Store app distribution, and an Admin API.
• Limits: Apple devices only. It is designed for small businesses without dedicated IT, so larger fleets still tend to connect a third-party MDM for deeper controls.

2. Miradore Free: best free MDM for mixed fleets

Miradore, now sold by GoTo as LogMeIn Miradore, has the most generous free device allowance: up to 50 devices across Android, iOS, macOS and Windows. New sites start with a 14-day trial of the Premium+ plan with unlimited devices, then drop to the Free plan.

• What you get: passcode enforcement, remote lock and wipe, passcode reset, Windows patch detection, Wi-Fi and email configuration, encryption status and enforcement, dashboards, standard reports and a notification center.
• Limits: app management, automation and full reporting require Premium ($2.75 per device on annual billing, $3.30 monthly).

3. ManageEngine Mobile Device Manager Plus: best fully featured free edition

ManageEngine’s free edition manages up to 25 devices and, unlike most free plans, is “fully-functional, and comes with all the features equipped,” according to the vendor. It supports Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and ChromeOS, and it is available both in the cloud and on-premises. You start with a 30-day trial for unlimited devices, which then converts to the free plan; devices enrolled during the trial stay managed.

• What you get: enrollment, profiles, mobile app management, security policies, content distribution, remote troubleshooting, OS update management and asset management.
• Limits: 25 devices and a single admin (technician) login. The first paid band is $495 a year for 50 devices on-premises or $645 a year in the cloud.

4. Mosyle Business Free: best free option for small Apple offices

Mosyle Business Free covers up to 30 Apple devices. Mosyle is Apple-only and has the lowest paid prices in the market: Business Premium costs $1 per Mac, iPhone, iPad or Vision Pro per month, with a 30-license minimum. Apple Watch management is included with an iPhone license, and each paid Mac or iOS license covers one Apple TV.

• Limits: Apple devices only, and the Fuse security and identity bundles ($3 per Mac, $1.50 per iOS device) are paid add-ons.

5. Jamf Now: free for up to 3 Apple devices

Jamf Now, Jamf’s plan for organisations with fewer than 25 employees, lets you “manage up to 3 devices for free.” Beyond that, pricing starts at $4 per device per month. It covers macOS, iOS, iPadOS and tvOS with app distribution, passcodes, remote lock and macOS malware protection. The free allowance is best for trying Jamf, not for running a business fleet. 6. Microsoft Basic Mobility and Security: free with Microsoft 365

Microsoft describes Basic Mobility and Security as “a free mobile device management (MDM) solution” and a subset of Intune. It comes with Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Business Standard and other Microsoft 365 and Office 365 subscriptions. It manages iOS and iPadOS, Android (including Samsung Knox) and Windows 10 and 11, controls access to email and documents, and can wipe devices.

7. Google Workspace basic mobile management

Does Google offer an MDM? Yes. Google says basic mobile management is turned on by default for every Google Workspace organisation, across Business, Enterprise, Frontline and Education editions, and even for Cloud Identity Free. It lets people use work accounts on phones with password requirements and managed Android apps. Advanced mobile management adds app management and device audits.

• Limits: it manages access to Google data on mobile devices; it is not a full MDM for laptops.

What is the best free MDM software for Android devices?

For Android, Miradore Free (up to 50 devices) and ManageEngine Mobile Device Manager Plus Free (up to 25, all features) are the strongest permanent free options. If your staff mainly need secure access to Google Workspace email and files on their phones, Google’s basic mobile management is already switched on at no cost. Does Apple have a free MDM?

Yes, since April 14, 2026. Apple Business is free and includes built-in device management for Apple devices. Before that, Apple’s MDM was a paid US-only subscription inside Apple Business Essentials. How do I create my own MDM?

You can, but few businesses should. A self-built Apple MDM needs an MDM server, a push certificate from Apple so the server can wake devices through the Apple Push Notification service, enrollment profiles, and ongoing work to keep up with each OS release. Android needs integration with Android Enterprise, and Windows uses its own built-in MDM protocol. For most teams a free tier from the list above gets the same result with no engineering time.

When free MDM stops being enough

• You pass the device cap (3, 25, 30 or 50 devices depending on the vendor).
• You need app deployment and patching, which Miradore and Mosyle reserve for paid plans.
• You need more than one admin; ManageEngine’s free edition includes a single technician.
• You need compliance evidence for audits such as SOC 2 or HIPAA, where reporting and automated enforcement matter.
