we mainly need a tool for basic ticket management and tracking. is service cloud too much for just that?

It might be more than you need if your requirements are limited to basic ticket management. Service Cloud has a lot of advanced features that add to its complexity. If you plan on growing or require multi-channel support in the future, it could be a good investment, but for basic needs, simpler tools might suffice.
If your needs are only basic ticket creation, assignment, status tracking, notes, and reporting, Service Cloud can definitely feel like overkill. That said, if you're already using Salesforce for CRM, I'd still consider it because having support tickets tied directly to Accounts and Contacts can be valuable. You also get room to add automation, SLAs, knowledge, routing, and other service features later without moving to another platform. If it's a standalone help desk and you don't need the broader Salesforce ecosystem, I'd compare simpler ticketing tools first.
