Useful but only if used with another source
I have been using Duolingo for a year to study French and Italian. The app is OK for those with prior knowledge of a language who want to refresh their knowledge, but I would not recommend for a complete beginner as the grammar explanations are poor/ non-existent. Even at a higher level, grammar explanations are very poor; for example, there is no comprehensive explanation of the subjunctive tense in French; which is widely used. If learning a language from scratch you need to find a ...

Paid for a broken subscription, no help [edited-working now]
**EDIT** *********** I've bumped up my review from 1 to 4 stars. Reason: I found that I needed to raise my issue (bug report) as a 'purchase issue', so once I've done that, Duolingo were in touch with a proposed solution within 48 hours. I'm glad to say the solution worked for me. So - if you have an issue with your Super Family subscription, where you have issues with your invite link. just Google 'Duolingo bug reporting' then fill in the form, but select the 'Purchasing issue' ...

Pretty basic but fun for starting off.
OK for starters in learning the basics, but soon deteriorates when at a more advanced level. No explanation is given when mistakes are made and how to correct them. It also uses American English, which someone who speaks English would never use. There is no option for English. It also uses some very childish texts. There are better online applications out there. But OK and fun for starting you off in learning another language. The Super version isn't worth it.

There may be better paid apps to learn…
There may be better paid apps to learn languages, but this one has a very solid free version. Then the paid option is cheaper than competitors. Good app overall, I don't understand the bad reviews it's getting.

Fine but with an expiring date
I have completed the whole course, it was fine. One needs the grammatical information from other sources but the training is ok. Unfortunately the following part - called personalised - it is not personalised at all and keeps repeating the very same sentences and words over and over

They often change the program, rules
I have had them change the course completely 2-3 times now, completely disrupting my learning. In the beginning it was good; but now i want to leave. They have strange phrases (I want to surf with the green owl) and confuse things with constant homosexuality phrases (keep it simple: "her wife" is just confusing). But after 1000 days I still am at it, as it is free and the best option I see. I just wish they would stop changing things, as every time it gets worse.
