What is Span-Level Tracing?

What does 'Span-Level Tracing' mean?

Span-level tracing breaks a run into individually timed units, each one carrying its own input, output, duration, token count and cost, nested to show which step triggered which. This is what turns "the agent was slow" into "the third retrieval took 11 seconds". It is also what most vendors meter on, so the span count of a typical run is worth measuring before signing.
