What does 'Buy Now Pay Later' mean?

A checkout option that lets a shopper split a purchase into instalments or defer payment, with a third-party provider paying the merchant up front and collecting from the customer afterwards. The merchant takes a fee and generally carries no credit risk, since the provider underwrites the buyer at the point of sale. It is offered mainly to lift conversion and average order value on higher-priced items.
