What does 'Academic (Education)' mean?

"Academic" Education is often described as instruction with the primary learning goal. Academic has been linked with "university" by some organizations and educational systems, however, this is not always the case. In contrast to vocational education, which is primarily concerned with "preparing to perform in the workplace," and "life education," which is concerned with "preparing to live well." These many educational methodologies have their roots in the past, yet many present educational systems still cling to them (sadly). On the other hand, the modern world has altered drastically and continues to develop at a rapid pace. Therefore, it would seem that these "ancient" notions for differentiating types of education require revision, if not a complete overhaul.
