Spotsaas Editor’s POV

DigitalOcean works best for teams running containerized applications, static sites, or small-to-medium databases on Linux. Before committing, verify that your workload fits their core strength: simple, stateless infrastructure. Check the pricing calculator for your expected bandwidth and storage—overage charges apply after free monthly allowances. If you need ...Read more

DigitalOcean Droplets pros and cons

  • Cloud infrastructure is reliable with a wide range of features and services.

  • UI makes it fast to spin up and manage cloud servers.

  • Pricing is competitive with transparent billing, backed by an extensive tutorial library.

  • APIs and documentation are developer-friendly with clear abstractions.

  • The marketplace for additional apps and services is limited, which may constrain advanced use cases.

  • Simplified feature set may not meet the needs of users requiring more advanced options.

"The best cloud based web host I have used in years!"

What do you like best? The affordable pricing, ease of use, quick time in adding new servers, reliable backup service, pre-built server images with LAMP software among many other software combinations of pre-built servers. I also appreciate the nice library of tutorials they have built up for installing many different software on there servers and configuring them. I cannot forget to mention they have a great API which will allow you to write software to automate any of the services they ...

"Long time power user review of the Digital Ocean platform"

What do you like best? I like the pre-baked VM images. The Docker image is excellent and is ready for production out of the box. The Wordpress image was so simple to work with that anyone can have a blog running in a few minutes. The documentation that they provide for installing 3rd party services is excellent. The support for IPV6 is a nice feature and something that is lacking in other service providers.

"Digital Ocean - Straightforward simplicity, while retaining a measure of power and flexibility"

What do you like best? What I like best about Digital Ocean is that the service is simultaneously straightforward in its simplicity while at the same time not being so simple that options are overly restricted. The interface is easy enough that I can give a quick run-down on setting up a droplet to less "server oriented" colleagues and they can digest the instructions without difficulty and run with it without further input, with the added benefit of having a well written library of support ...

"Better than local VM"

What do you like best? It's not OpenVZ. True virtualization. Works precisely up to assigned resources. Very cheap.

"All-around great solution if it fits your needs"

What do you like best? I have not been able to beat their pricing for what you get. A full VPS for $5/month? Not easy to find. Having a VPS is beneficial since you can basically install and configure everything exactly as you like. This requires technical expertise of course, but if you have or hire it, then any limits you would have with shared hosting (which could cost you more than DigitalOcean) are removed.
