What does 'Reranking' mean?
Reranking takes the candidate passages a first search returned and scores them again with a model that reads the query and the passage together, so the handful sent to the generator are the most relevant rather than merely the nearest. It is usually the cheapest large improvement available to an existing pipeline, because it changes only the last step. Compare latency added per query and the per-token rate, since reranking runs on every request.
