What is Chunking?
What does 'Chunking' mean?
Chunking splits a parsed document into the pieces that get indexed and retrieved, which sets the size of the context a model finally sees. Too small and a passage loses the sentence that gave it meaning; too large and the model is handed mostly irrelevant text and the cost rises with it. The products worth looking at respect document structure when they split, keep the heading a passage sat under, and let a team change the strategy without reprocessing everything by hand.
