Short answer: the best order management software depends on where your orders come from and how many places you ship from. For most small businesses selling on a web store plus one or two marketplaces, Zoho Inventory, Linnworks or Veeqo cover order sync, stock and shipping without an ERP-sized project. Growing brands that sell both direct and wholesale usually look at Brightpearl, Cin7 or Extensiv Order Manager. Companies that want orders, inventory and the general ledger in one database choose an ERP such as NetSuite. Large omnichannel retailers routing orders across stores and distribution centres need distributed order management from Salesforce, IBM Sterling, Manhattan Associates or Fluent Commerce.

Below you will find a comparison table, recommendations by business size and model, short profiles of 13 tools, how OMS pricing works, and a checklist for choosing. If you are new to the category, start with our explainer on what an order management system is.

Best order management software compared

The order of the table follows business size, not a ranking. Features and pricing change often, so confirm current details on each vendor’s site before you book demos.

What is the best order management software?

There is no single winner, because order management covers very different jobs. Match the tool to the job you are hiring it for:

  • “I oversell because my channels don’t share stock.” You need multichannel inventory sync first: Zoho Inventory, Linnworks, Veeqo or Orderhive.
  • “Shipping takes too long and labels are manual.” A shipping-first platform such as ShipStation or Veeqo will make the biggest difference.
  • “We sell wholesale and D2C and they run as two businesses.” Look at Cin7 or Brightpearl, which handle B2B price lists, terms and wholesale orders next to ecommerce.
  • “We have three warehouses and a 3PL.” You need routing rules across locations: Extensiv Order Manager, Brightpearl, Cin7 or, at scale, a distributed OMS.
  • “Finance can’t reconcile orders to the ledger.” Either an OMS with strong accounting posting (Brightpearl) or an ERP with native order management (NetSuite).
  • “We have hundreds of stores and want ship from store.” That is enterprise distributed order management: Manhattan Active Omni, IBM Sterling, Salesforce Order Management or Fluent Commerce.

What is the best order management software for small business?

For a small business, the best order management system is the one that removes manual work without creating an implementation project. In practice that means four things: native connectors for the channels you already sell on, one stock number shared across those channels, label printing or a clean shipping integration, and a direct sync to your accounting package (QuickBooks, Xero or Zoho Books).

Our small-business picks:

  • Zoho Inventory if you want the widest scope for the lowest complexity: sales orders, purchase orders, stock across warehouses, invoices, and ecommerce and shipping integrations. It is a natural fit if you already use Zoho Books or Zoho CRM. See Zoho Inventory pricing for what each tier includes.
  • Linnworks if most of your volume comes from marketplaces and you list the same products across several of them. Its strength is keeping listings, stock and orders consistent across many channels.
  • Veeqo if Amazon is your biggest channel and you ship from your own stockroom.
  • ShipStation if orders already sync fine and the bottleneck is picking, packing and labelling.

Before you buy, check which tier you land on at your peak month, not your average one, since many small-business OMS tools price by orders or shipments per month.

What does “simple” order management software look like?

Simple order management software does a few things automatically: pulls in every order, reserves stock, prints the label and pushes tracking back to the channel. You should be able to connect a storefront and a marketplace yourself in an afternoon, without a consultant. If a demo starts with a discovery workshop and a statement of work, you are looking at a mid-market tool, which may be right later but is rarely the first step.

When does a small business outgrow its first OMS?

Common triggers are adding wholesale customers on payment terms, opening a second warehouse or signing a 3PL, needing EDI for a retail account, or finance asking for order-level margin that the tool cannot produce. That is usually the point to look at Cin7, Brightpearl or an ERP.

Best order management software for growing and mid-market brands

Mid-market buyers typically have five to fifty people touching orders, sell through several storefronts and marketplaces, have at least one wholesale channel, and ship from more than one location. The requirements shift from “sync my channels” to “automate my operation”:

  • Order routing across warehouses, 3PLs and drop-ship suppliers.
  • B2B features: customer-specific pricing, credit limits, terms, minimum order quantities, a B2B ordering portal, EDI.
  • Purchasing and replenishment tied to sales velocity.
  • Accounting posting detailed enough for finance to close the month without spreadsheets.
  • Roles, permissions, audit history and single sign-on for a larger team.

Brightpearl positions itself as a retail operating system: orders, inventory, purchasing, warehouse, CRM and an accounting ledger in one product, with an automation engine for rules such as auto-allocating, auto-shipping and auto-invoicing clean orders. Cin7 is strong for product brands that need a B2B portal, EDI and point of sale alongside ecommerce. Extensiv Order Manager suits brands whose complexity is in fulfilment: several warehouses, several 3PLs and routing between them. Linnworks also serves many mid-sized marketplace sellers. Our Brightpearl vs Cin7 and Brightpearl vs Linnworks pages compare these side by side.

When should you use an ERP for order management?

An ERP such as NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, SAP Business One, Odoo or Acumatica includes sales order management as part of the order-to-cash process. Choose the ERP route when finance and operations want one database for orders, inventory, purchasing and the general ledger; when you have several legal entities or currencies; or when you manufacture or assemble as well as sell. The trade-off is a bigger implementation, and marketplace integrations that often come from connectors or partners, not the core product. Many mid-sized companies run a dedicated OMS on top of an ERP for exactly that reason. Our Brightpearl vs NetSuite comparison walks through this decision, and our best ERP software guide covers the ERP options.

Enterprise order management systems

Enterprise retailers and distributors buy order management for a different reason: they have inventory in hundreds of places and want to sell all of it through every channel. Distributed order management (DOM) makes each store and distribution centre a possible fulfilment point, calculates available-to-promise stock in real time, and routes each order line by cost, speed and capacity. It powers buy online pick up in store, ship from store, endless aisle and cross-channel returns.

  • Salesforce Order Management fits retailers on Salesforce Commerce Cloud and Service Cloud, since orders, customers and service cases share one platform.
  • IBM Sterling Order Management is a long-established enterprise DOM used by large retailers and distributors with complex networks.
  • Manhattan Active Omni combines order management with store fulfilment and contact-centre tools, which suits store-heavy retailers.
  • Fluent Commerce is a cloud-native, API-first OMS that often sits alongside an existing ERP and ecommerce platform.

These are quote-based, multi-phase programmes that usually involve a systems integrator. Evaluate them on routing flexibility, inventory accuracy at store level, integration with your POS and ERP, and how store staff actually pick and pack.

B2B vs D2C order management: what changes?

Requirement D2C and marketplace B2B and wholesale
Order source Storefront checkouts, marketplace APIs Sales reps, B2B portal, email, EDI purchase orders
Pricing One public price, promotions Customer-specific price lists, volume breaks, contracts
Payment Paid at checkout Invoiced on terms, credit limits, statements
Order shape Small orders, high volume, parcel shipping Large orders, partial shipments, backorders, pallet or freight
Compliance Marketplace handling-time and tracking rules Retailer routing guides, labelling and EDI documents

If you sell both ways, test B2B scenarios in every demo. Many tools built for D2C handle wholesale only through workarounds.

How much does order management software cost?

Few OMS vendors publish complete price lists, and the pricing model tells you more than a headline number. The common models are:

  • Tiers by order or shipment volume: typical for small-business tools. Check what counts as an order and what happens when you exceed a tier in peak season.
  • Per user: common in ERP-based order management and some mid-market tools.
  • Add-ons by channel, location or module: extra marketplaces, warehouses, B2B portals, EDI or POS can each add cost.
  • Quote-based annual contracts: standard for mid-market and enterprise, usually with an onboarding or implementation fee and sometimes partner fees for integrations.
  • GMV or order-value based: used by some enterprise commerce platforms.

Compare total cost over three years: subscription at your expected volume, onboarding, integrations and connectors, EDI provider fees if you need them, and internal time. For individual tools, see our pricing pages for Brightpearl, Cin7, Zoho Inventory and NetSuite.

Order management tool profiles

Zoho Inventory

A cloud inventory and order management tool from Zoho for small businesses. It handles sales orders, purchase orders, invoices, multiple warehouses, batch and serial tracking, and connects to common storefronts, marketplaces and shipping carriers. Its advantage is the Zoho ecosystem: orders flow into Zoho Books and customer data into Zoho CRM. It is less suited to complex multi-warehouse routing at high volume.

Linnworks

A multichannel commerce platform aimed at sellers who list across many marketplaces and storefronts. It centralises listings, stock levels and orders, applies rules to route and process orders, and prints shipping labels. It suits marketplace-led businesses; brands with heavy wholesale needs should test B2B workflows carefully. See Linnworks alternatives.

Veeqo

An inventory, order and shipping tool owned by Amazon. It combines multichannel stock sync with picking, packing and label printing, and is popular with sellers whose main channel is Amazon. Compare it with ShipStation on our ShipStation vs Veeqo page.

ShipStation

A shipping-first platform that imports orders from many channels, compares carrier rates, prints labels in batches, applies automation rules and sends branded tracking. It includes basic inventory features but is not built to be your inventory system of record, so it is often paired with an inventory tool. See ShipStation alternatives.

Orderhive

A small-business multichannel tool combining order processing, inventory sync and purchasing in one screen, with connectors for common ecommerce platforms and marketplaces. A reasonable option for sellers who want one simple dashboard.

Cin7

An inventory and order management platform for product brands that sell through retail, wholesale and ecommerce at once. Notable features include a B2B ordering portal, EDI, point of sale, and connections to 3PLs and marketplaces. It is often compared with Zoho Inventory by smaller brands and with Brightpearl by larger ones. See Cin7 alternatives.

Brightpearl

A retail operations platform for mid-sized omnichannel retailers and wholesalers. It combines order management, inventory, purchasing, warehouse management, CRM and an accounting ledger, with an automation layer for repetitive order steps. It is sold on quote with a structured onboarding. See Brightpearl alternatives and our Brightpearl vs NetSuite comparison.

Extensiv Order Manager (formerly Skubana)

A multichannel order management platform for brands that fulfil from several warehouses and 3PLs. It routes orders across locations, manages inventory and purchasing, and provides analytics on stock and margin. Extensiv also sells warehouse software for 3PLs, which helps when your 3PL uses it too.

NetSuite

Oracle’s cloud ERP. Order management is part of an order-to-cash process that also covers inventory, purchasing, billing, revenue recognition and the general ledger, with multi-subsidiary and multi-currency support and SuiteCommerce for ecommerce. It is the strongest choice when finance needs one system, and the heaviest to implement. See NetSuite alternatives.

Salesforce Order Management

Order management built on the Salesforce platform, designed to work with Commerce Cloud storefronts and Service Cloud, so service agents can see and change orders in the same place they handle cases.

IBM Sterling Order Management

An enterprise distributed order management system with network-wide inventory visibility, sourcing rules and available-to-promise. It suits large retailers, distributors and manufacturers with complex fulfilment networks.

Manhattan Active Omni

Manhattan Associates’ cloud-native omnichannel suite, combining order management, store inventory and fulfilment, and customer service. It fits retailers whose stores are also fulfilment centres.

Fluent Commerce

A cloud-native, API-first distributed OMS focused on order routing and inventory availability across channels and locations, usually deployed next to an existing ERP and commerce platform.

How to choose order management software

  1. Write down your order mix. Channels, monthly and peak order volume, number of stock locations, share of B2B orders, and whether you need EDI.
  2. Decide what the system of record is. Will the OMS own inventory, or will an ERP? Where do financial postings happen? Settle this before demos.
  3. Short-list by integration fit. Only consider tools with native, maintained connectors for your channels, 3PLs, shipping carriers and accounting package.
  4. Demo with your worst orders. A bundle, a split shipment, a backorder, a return, a wholesale order on terms and a marketplace order with a tight handling time.
  5. Check admin and security. Roles and permissions, audit history on order edits, single sign-on (SAML or OIDC) and user provisioning for larger teams, and the vendor’s security documentation.
  6. Model three-year cost at your expected volume, including onboarding, integrations and the next tier up.
  7. Ask for references from companies with your channel mix and similar order volume.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best order management software for small business?

For most small businesses, Zoho Inventory, Linnworks or Veeqo. Zoho Inventory covers the broadest set of basics at low complexity, Linnworks suits sellers listing across many marketplaces, and Veeqo suits Amazon-led sellers who ship in-house. If the only pain is labels and shipping, ShipStation may be all you need.

What is an order management system used for?

It pulls orders from every sales channel into one queue, reserves stock so you do not oversell, decides which location ships each order, sends the work to the warehouse or 3PL, updates customers with tracking, handles returns and passes the financial result to accounting. Our OMS explainer covers the full lifecycle.

How much does order management software cost?

Small-business tools are usually monthly subscriptions tiered by orders or shipments. Mid-market and enterprise systems are quote-based annual contracts with onboarding fees. Budget for integrations, EDI and the next volume tier, not just the entry price.

Is an ERP better than a dedicated OMS?

  • Choose an ERP when you need one database for finance, inventory and purchasing, have several entities, or manufacture.
  • Choose a dedicated OMS when the challenge is channel volume, marketplace integrations and fulfilment routing.

Many growing companies run both, with the OMS feeding the ERP.

Does Shopify have order management?

Yes, for orders placed on its own storefront and POS. Merchants who add marketplaces, wholesale, EDI or several warehouses usually connect Shopify to a dedicated OMS or inventory platform, which treats Shopify as one channel among several.

What should a B2B order management system include?

Customer-specific price lists, payment terms and credit limits, quotes that convert to orders, partial shipments and backorders, a self-service ordering portal and EDI for retail customers. Test each of these in a demo, since many D2C-first tools only approximate them.

How long does it take to switch order management systems?

Small multichannel tools with standard connectors can be set up quickly by the business itself. Mid-market platforms typically run a structured onboarding, and enterprise distributed order management is a phased programme. Clean SKU data and a clear list of routing rules shorten any timeline.
