Basic alerting will lead to many false positives but with NPM you can quiet your alerts down to just what you want to be alerted on... which is the main idea right? What do you like best about SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor? The ability to have config backups and use those backups for config checks. We have port-security on a set of switch ports and we can check every night that those ports still have it configured. The ability to either dive deep into services or routes or just see if the device is pinging is great. The notification settings that can be customized assists with the ability to separate the alerting to various groups within an organization.
