Spotsaas Editor’s POV

SketchUp's main strength is its learning curve—most users move from basic to productive within days, not weeks. The 3D-to-2D conversion works reliably for architectural drawings and permit sets. The component library is extensive, which speeds up common tasks like adding doors, windows, and furniture. However, verify in a demo that the software handles your ...Read more

A fast way of making three dimensional forms that I envision and make sketches

What do you like best? During a design process of an architectural project, I start to make sketches. After that I want to see my ideas / building how they look ike. At this step, I use SketchUp. By using SketchUp, I make three dimensional models in order to understand the proportions of the project. It is very beneficial to look at your conceptual model during your design process. Also, in advanced stages of design process, I can model all the technical details (fitting, lighting ...

Great for a free product and Great warehouse resource available

What do you like best? I like that it is fairly simple. The fact that it is free made it available to many of me and my classmates as students. We were able to create massing models and take perspectives, from there we would sketch over details, landscape, scale figures etc. to make a convincing drawing. The fact that you can geolocate the model to get accurate shadows for that location, at any time of day or year, is super interesting. What do you dislike? It can be very finicky about ...

Great architectural design tool, if used the right way

What do you like best? Very intuitive and easy to use. Free. It is possible to achieve a great amount of precision and detail in a design with a highly organised model structure, much like any other paid CAD or BIM software. In the pro version, with the addition of Layout, it is possible to document the whole thing for publishing and printing for a fair and accessible price. What do you dislike? Sometimes Sketchup lacks the power to maintain a smooth navigation when the model has large ...

Great 'go-to' software

What do you like best? Its a very intuitive software that almost anyone can use. I've worked at large and small firms that like to use it for conversational 3D Modeling since its so easy to manipulate objects. Out of the box its great for rough renderings but if you want more photo realistic images its a program that you can easily bring into 3DSMax or get plug-ins for, like Vray and Podium. What do you dislike? I do wish that I could create floorplans like Autocad. I know this isnt what ...

Modeling and drawing in 3D made to be an uncomplicated process.

What do you like best? Sketchup is an easy to use and intuitive 3D application for 'swiftly' creating models. It's famed 'push and pull' and other basic tools boasts fluidity when whipping up conceptual forms and documenting 3D models. The LayOut feature enables the simple drafting of floor plans and 2D illustration. Also, many visual styles are available to display scenes in interesting visualizations; we have here line art to shaded styles. These 'Styles,' depending on choice, may let ...

One of the easiest modeling software for beginners

What do you like best? The best use of this tool is how easy and intuitive is for new users who are just beginning to experience 3d modeling, tools and menus are very easy to find and customize, What do you dislike? The downside of this software is that the pluggins are made by community users, some of these plugins should come by default, in order to obtain them we must create a google account or login with an existing one, and then download them from the plugin warehouse. Also, they ...

This is one of the easiest softwares to work on.

What do you like best? The ease with which you can make 3d and edit is the best part of SketchUp. Once you have basic plan drafted in Autocad the massing model can be done in a matter of minutes. I have used Sketchup at an Urban Planning scale to a building scale both of which have given me the desired quality output. The material library has developed a lot over the last two years and are very helpful. What do you dislike? Two thing I dislike about the SketchUp are the inability to edit ...

A Useful Modeling Resource

What do you like best? SketchUp allows the user to create a 3D model with an approximate scale that allows for the ability to visualize and conceptualize designs in the real world. Particularly useful is the ability to import google earth maps into a SketchUp creation to visualize not only how a space looks within itself, but also with surrounding buildings and landscape. The program is easy to learn, extremely creative, and allows for complete customization. Another great resource is the ...

Fantastic and easy to learn and use CAD program that you can do a lot with

What do you like best? It's very easy to get your bearings and quickly learn how to manage the work space. It is the easiest tool out there to quickly mock up 3D designs and models without extensive training or experience. There are extensive videos and training courses out there, which can provide very valuable education on how to handle the more finicky ways SketchUp handles its models. Finally, there is an extensive amount of extensions that are user created, some free some paid, that ...

Ultimate 3D model software

What do you like best? I love using Sketchup due to the fact that its like drawing cartoons. It adds a fun aspect to building useful models. I use Sketchup in conjunction with Infraworks Software from Autodesk. I use it to add buildings, cars, people, utilities, and basically anything else you can think to add. What do you dislike? One thing I dislike is the implementation of texturing. I think it could be more user friendly, especially on the export end. I run into problems where some ...
