It is built to do a specific task and is able to do that specific task. When using IBM software suite you kind of need WAS to do your job. With the proper hardware the performance should be good, the administration is actually more easy than in the past and IBM is working to make more easy to admin, if your solution is working with more IBM solutions, WAS should be the right selection for your aplication server.
