Claude Pro costs $20 per month billed monthly, or $17 per month if you pay for a year up front, which Anthropic bills as $200 at once. Above it, Max is $100 per month and Ultra is $200. Below it, a permanent free tier costs nothing. Every figure here is in US dollars, read off anthropic.com/pricing on 8 November 2026.
Prices move, so confirm before you buy. What follows is the whole ladder, what separates each rung, and the part most comparisons skip: the usage limits are the product, not the model.
Every Claude plan and what it costs
| Plan | Price | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Occasional questions, trying the interface |
| Pro | $17 per month billed annually ($200 up front), or $20 monthly | Everyday work |
| Max | $100 per month | All-day work, five times Pro usage |
| Ultra | $200 per month | The longest tasks, ten times Pro weekly usage |
| Team, standard seat | $20 per seat per month billed annually, $25 monthly | Shared billing and admin controls, 2 to 150 seats |
| Team, premium seat | $100 per seat per month billed annually, $125 monthly | Five times a standard seat’s usage |
| Enterprise | $20 per seat per month billed annually, 20 seat minimum, plus usage at API rates | Procurement, SSO, signed terms |
Two figures in that table surprise people. The first is that Claude Pro and a standard Claude Team seat are both $20 billed annually, so moving from an individual subscription to a team workspace is not the price jump you might brace for. The second is that Enterprise starts at the same $20 per seat, with the cost arriving as usage billed at API rates rather than as a higher seat fee.
The $17 versus $20 question
There is only one difference and it is the billing cycle. Paying monthly costs $20. Committing to a year costs $17 a month, charged as $200 up front.
That is $40 a year saved for giving up the ability to cancel mid-year. Worth it if Claude is already part of your week. Not worth it in month one, when you do not yet know whether you will hit the limits that make the paid tier worthwhile. Start monthly, then switch at renewal once you know your own usage pattern.
What the usage limits mean, because this is what you are buying
Every Claude plan is capped two ways at once: a limit every 5 hours and a limit every week. The published multiples read like this:
- Free: limited on both.
- Pro: the baseline, counted as one times, on both windows.
- Max: five times Pro usage, on both the 5-hour and weekly windows.
- Ultra: ten times Pro’s weekly usage, with no 5-hour limit for verified accounts.
This is the part worth internalising before you spend $100 or $200. The upgrade does not buy better answers. It buys more of them. Max and Ultra run the same models as Pro. If you hit a wall mid-afternoon and have to stop, more headroom is worth real money. If you never hit the cap on Pro, the higher tiers are spending for nothing.
Two extras ride along with the upper tiers. Max includes $100 a month in API credits and Ultra includes $200 a month, usable for building on the Claude platform, plus priority access when traffic is high. On Pro, the newest model is available paid with usage credits; on Max it is included up to half your weekly limit.
Claude Code, and what is bundled rather than sold separately
A lot of searches look for a separate Claude Code price. There is not one. Claude Code is included in the paid consumer plans, as are Claude Design, Claude Docs, Claude Science, Projects, and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365. Claude Dashboards and Claude Motion are listed as beta features on the paid tiers.
The same answers the question about a Claude Design subscription: it is a feature of the plans you already looked at, available across Free, Pro, Max and Ultra, not a product with its own price.
Where the money genuinely changes shape is building against the API, covered below.
Claude Team and Enterprise cost
Team runs from 2 to 150 seats and lets you mix seat types in one workspace. A standard seat is $20 per seat per month billed annually, or $25 monthly. A premium seat, with five times the usage, is $100 per seat per month annually or $125 monthly. Team pools up to $500 a month in API credits across the workspace, and the published terms state no model training on your content by default.
Enterprise is $20 per seat per month billed annually with a 20 seat minimum, plus usage billed at API rates. That structure matters more than the seat number: your bill scales with how hard the organisation actually uses it, so a 50-seat deployment where ten people use it daily costs very differently from one where all fifty do.
For the fuller breakdown of how seat fee and usage billing interact at that level, our Claude Enterprise pricing post goes further than this page does.
Claude pricing for students
Anthropic publishes an Education plan, but it is sold to institutions rather than to individuals: a university-wide agreement covering students, faculty and staff at discounted rates, with academic research and learning modes, dedicated API credits and adoption training. No public per-student price is listed, so it is a conversation with Anthropic, not a checkout.
If you are a student buying for yourself rather than through your university, the standard ladder above is what you pay. Start on the free tier, and move to Pro monthly only once you are hitting limits in a normal week of coursework.
Claude API pricing, if you are building rather than subscribing
Subscription pricing and API pricing are different products, and comparing one figure against the other tells you nothing. API rates are per million tokens, in US dollars:
| Model | Input | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Fable 5.1 | $10 | $50 |
| Opus 5.5 | $4 | $20 |
| Sonnet 5.5 | $2 | $10 |
Prompt caching and batch processing both reduce that materially, with batch processing published at half price. If your workload is high volume and repetitive, those two levers move your bill more than picking a cheaper model does.
Claude cost versus ChatGPT
The short version: at the tier most people buy, they are the same price. Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus are both $20 a month billed monthly. Claude is cheaper on an annual commitment at $17. ChatGPT is cheaper to start, because its Go tier is $8 and Claude publishes nothing below Pro.
Since the price is a tie, decide on the work. Our Claude vs ChatGPT comparison covers that plan by plan, and ChatGPT Plus price covers the other side’s ladder on its own terms.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Claude Pro cost for a month?
Claude Pro is $20 for one month if you pay monthly. If you commit to a year, it works out at $17 a month, billed as $200 up front. Both figures are US dollars from Anthropic’s own pricing page, and both are subject to change at Anthropic’s discretion.
Is Claude Pro worth the cost?
It is worth it if you are hitting the free tier’s limits in a normal week, because that is precisely what the $20 buys. Pro runs the same models as the free tier with more usage, plus Claude Code, Projects and Artifacts. If you rarely reach the cap, stay free.
Is there a free trial for Claude Pro?
There is no time-limited Pro trial. Instead there is a permanent free tier at $0 with capped usage every 5 hours and every week, which you can use indefinitely. That makes testing straightforward: work on the free plan until you hit the ceiling, then pay monthly.
How much is a subscription to Claude Design?
There is no separate Claude Design subscription. It is a feature available across the Free, Pro, Max and Ultra plans, alongside Claude Docs and Claude Slides. The price you pay is whichever plan from the table above you choose.
